Two hours after a man loudly accused me of being an “entitled parent” for asking him to switch seats, a flight attendant was standing over his row with rubber gloves and a stack of towels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His seat was a mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So were his clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the commotion had caught the attention of almost the entire cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Absolutely. I just wanted to ask you something before I move.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked impatient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My daughter is sitting here, and my assigned seat is a window four rows back. Would you mind switching with me?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My seat is a window. I’m offering it to you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t want your seat.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I paid for this one.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then it’s yours.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stepped into the aisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That should have ended it. It didn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked at Sophie, then at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m just sick of entitled parents acting like having children means everybody else owes them something.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie stared at her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That bothered me far more than anything he’d said to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I lowered my voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I asked you one question. You said no. There’s no reason to speak to us like that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He scoffed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then maybe don’t put strangers in uncomfortable situations.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You okay?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded, but her eyes were wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’ll be right behind you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m Carla.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Jennifer.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we took off, I checked on Sophie several times by looking between the seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man beside her put on his headphones almost immediately and ignored everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, that was fine with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An older woman who seemed friendly was sitting by the window on Sophie’s other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 40 minutes into the flight, Sophie turned around and gave me a thumbs-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around the two-hour mark, the seat belt sign came on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The captain announced we’d hit a stretch of rough air and asked everyone to remain seated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing extreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just enough shaking to make drinks wobble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carla gripped her armrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I hate turbulence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Me too.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked toward Sophie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was sitting upright, hands folded in her lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The older woman beside her said something, and Sophie smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I heard a strange noise across the aisle from her row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was fumbling with something in his hands, clearly struggling with a sudden wave of nausea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A flight attendant was still several rows away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man beside Sophie noticed too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pulled one headphone off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then everything happened at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plane dropped slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a dramatic plunge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked completely horrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie screamed and pressed herself toward the window side of her row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man jumped up instinctively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which was unfortunate because the seat belt sign was on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sir! Sit down!” a flight attendant shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am NOT sitting in that!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can’t blame him for that part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody wanted him sitting in that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disturbance spread through the cabin almost instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several passengers turned away in discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone farther back called, “Oh my God.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another passenger pressed a sweater over his nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flight attendants moved quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One checked on the sick man, who was conscious and apologizing repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another brought cleaning supplies and helped contain the mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man beside Sophie stood awkwardly in the aisle, looking utterly horrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then our eyes met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knew. I knew. Carla knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She whispered, “Oh, no.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bit the inside of my cheek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And not something I would wish on a stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there was an obvious fact hanging between us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If he had accepted my offer, I would’ve been sitting in that aisle seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He would’ve been four rows back at the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, I was perfectly clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sick passenger was eventually moved to a nearby open seat after the crew determined he was stable enough to continue and was probably suffering from a combination of motion sickness and something he’d eaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The affected aisle seat was another problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no magical spare seat available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flight was nearly full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crew had the man wait near the rear galley during the cleanup, then asked for a volunteer to change seats so he could sit elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie was moved too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A flight attendant brought her back to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the best part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Would you like your daughter to sit nearby for the rest of the flight?” she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes, please.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carla volunteered to take Sophie’s original middle seat once it had been confirmed clean and unaffected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Seriously?” I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She shrugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have three boys. I’ve seen worse.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Sophie sat beside me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man eventually ended up two rows ahead, wearing a spare pair of pants that another passenger had offered him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His expensive blue shirt had been set aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wore a thin undershirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked miserable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie whispered, “Mom?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yeah?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If he’d switched seats\u2026”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It would have been you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She thought for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Is it bad that I’m glad he was mean?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried not to smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Oh.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But I’m relieved I wasn’t the one sitting there.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That made her laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I whispered, “We can feel grateful without celebrating his bad day.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded solemnly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Okay.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then added, “But it’s kind of karma.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eleven-year-olds are not known for philosophical restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked toward the man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was staring straight ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I wouldn’t use that word too loudly.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie grinned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest of the flight was uneventful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we landed, I assumed we’d never speak to him again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we waited for the aircraft door to open, he approached us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had changed into his replacement clothes, but his shoes were inside a plastic bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was wearing disposable slippers from some emergency kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was difficult to reconcile this man with the confident person who’d lectured me three hours earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stopped beside our row. “Hey.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked up. “Hi.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He glanced at Sophie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then at me. “I owe you an apology.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That surprised me. “For what?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gave me a tired look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You know what.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’d rather hear you say it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie looked at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could almost hear her thinking: Mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My name is Eric.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Jennifer.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was rude to you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I could’ve just said I wanted to keep my seat.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I didn’t need to make a whole thing about it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he said, “I’ve had bad experiences with seat switching.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently, on a previous flight, a family had pressured him to give up an exit-row seat he’d paid extra for and move to a middle seat near the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he refused, they complained loudly and called him selfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So when you asked, I assumed it was going to be the same thing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I can understand why you’d be annoyed by that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked relieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I added, “But I wasn’t those people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His face fell slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You got angry with me for an argument I hadn’t had with you yet.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You’re right.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie was listening carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And I’m sorry I made you uncomfortable.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie said, “It’s okay.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I immediately said, “You don’t have to say it’s okay if it wasn’t.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Your mom’s right.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie thought about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then\u2026 thank you for apologizing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was proud of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Sophie, because she is 11 and apparently incapable of leaving a situation gracefully, said, “Also, if you had switched, my mom would’ve been the one caught in that mess.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sophie.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What? It’s true.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric stared at her for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then laughed. Really laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have thought about that approximately four hundred times.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That broke me. I laughed too. Even Sophie did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I suppose I finally found one reason to be grateful I was stubborn.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I said, “Don’t take the wrong lesson from this.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He laughed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Fair.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We got off the plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At baggage claim, I saw Eric one more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was standing near the carousel in borrowed pants, waiting for his suitcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I walked over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You okay?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Physically?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My dignity died somewhere over Georgia.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The other passenger?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Flight attendant said he was feeling better.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Good.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then his expression turned serious again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For what it’s worth, I really am sorry.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I believe you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That seemed to matter to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said, “I travel a lot for work. I think I’ve gotten too used to assuming everybody wants something from me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Maybe.””I was having a terrible morning too.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What happened?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He’d missed an earlier connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His luggage had been rerouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His boss was angry because he’d be late to a meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He’d slept four hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then said, “Still wasn’t my fault.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m learning.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie and I met my sister outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first thing Sophie said was, “Aunt Rachel, a man wouldn’t let Mom sit with me, and then something really embarrassing happened to him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So much for my careful version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My sister stared at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Long flight.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the next several days, Sophie told the story to basically anyone who would listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her cousins. My brother-in-law. My mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, I heard her telling my niece, “It was karma because he was rude.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I interrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was turbulence and an airsick passenger.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophie rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mom, you’re ruining the story.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I don’t actually think what happened to Eric was because he was rude to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That isn’t how life works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sick passenger didn’t become ill so the universe could teach Eric manners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The turbulence wasn’t divine intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An extremely unfortunate coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What mattered more was what happened after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric apologized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I demanded one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because a flight attendant forced him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had several hours to sit with the fact that he’d turned a simple question into a public humiliation for a mother and her kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then his day went spectacularly wrong, and apparently it gave him enough perspective to reconsider how he’d behaved before it did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also learned something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asking someone to switch seats is not the same as being entitled to their seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric had every right to say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I meant that before the incident and after it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What he didn’t have the right to do was treat me like I’d committed some moral offense simply for asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People are allowed to have boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’re also allowed to express them without humiliating strangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A week later, Sophie asked me, “Would you ask someone to switch again?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked surprised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Even after that guy?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Of course.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What if they say no?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then they say no.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And what if they’re mean?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then we hope they’re sitting in the right place when turbulence starts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stared at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Mom!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m kidding.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mostly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truth is, I’m grateful Eric didn’t switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I wanted something awful to happen to him, but because whenever I imagine sitting where he was when that passenger got sick, I feel relieved I avoided the ordeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric had insisted on keeping exactly what belonged to him. That was completely his right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the flight, however, I don’t think either of us had ever seen a man regret winning an argument quite so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
