The boy came walking toward our bikes in hand-me-down sneakers, holding the ugliest little motorcycle I’d ever seen.

It was carved out of wood. The wheels were bottle caps, the kickstand was a bent nail, and it wobbled every time he set it down.

He rolled it right up next to Hammer’s Road King and made engine noises with his mouth. Hammer laughed first. He’s 6’4″ and has a laugh you can hear over straight pipes.

“Son, that thing’s got less horsepower than my granny’s walker,” he said.

We all cracked up, me included. Somebody asked if it came with training wheels.

The boy didn’t say a word. He just pulled the toy against his chest with both hands, like we might take it from him.

Over at pump four, a woman in a faded waitress uniform looked up. She didn’t yell or come over. She just looked tired, like this wasn’t the first time grown men had laughed at her kid.

That’s what got me. I’ve got grandkids that age.

I walked over, crouched down with my knees popping, and told him I was sorry. Then I asked if I could see his bike.

He thought about it for a long time before he held it out.

Up close, I could see the work in it. Every edge was sanded smooth, and the handlebars were coat hanger wire wrapped in electrical tape like real grips.

Then I turned it sideways and saw the name carved into the little gas tank.

DIESEL.

Under it, in tiny letters, it said, “For my boy. Keep the rubber side down.”

My hands started shaking. Diesel was Danny Kowalski, and he rode with us for eleven years. He said “keep the rubber side down” every time we split up at a crossroads.

He died on the shoulder of I-70 six years ago. His girlfriend was pregnant at the funeral, and a month later she was just gone.

I looked at the woman at pump four. Then at Hammer, who had gone white as a sheet.

Because nobody in that lot knew what Hammer and I knew. Diesel was only standing on that shoulder that night because Hammer had called him at ten after one in the morning, drunk out of his mind, from a ditch by the Abilene exit.

I know that because Hammer called me a little after two, from that same ditch, and I could hear sirens behind his voice.

I got there at a quarter to three. The semi was jackknifed across the shoulder with its flashers still blinking, and Diesel’s pickup was folded against the guardrail like a beer can. Hammer’s Road King lay in the grass where he’d dumped it, front wheel still pointed at the sky.

The man driving that truck had been awake for twenty hours. He drifted onto the shoulder at sixty-three miles an hour while Diesel was standing at his tailgate, pulling down the loading ramp. The trooper told me Diesel never saw it coming, like that was supposed to help.

Hammer was sitting on the guardrail with blood on his hands. He wasn’t hurt. The blood wasn’t his.

“I called him, Walt,” he kept saying. “I called him instead of a tow truck. I called him.”

Hammer already had one DUI on his record. A second one would have cost him his license and his job driving a cement mixer, and he knew it. Diesel knew it too. That’s why Diesel came himself and didn’t call anybody else. He would have hauled any one of us out of any ditch in Kansas without asking a single question.

The trooper wrote it up as a disabled motorcycle. Nobody asked how it got disabled.

And here’s the part I’ve never said out loud until now. Before the sun came up, I sat in my truck with Hammer and told him what we were going to tell the brothers. Bad stator. Bike quit on him, he called Diesel for a haul, wrong place at the wrong time. I said it would spare everybody a lot of pain. I said Diesel wouldn’t want Hammer crucified over it.

I told myself I was protecting a brother. Really, I was protecting all of us from having to look at it.

We buried Danny “Diesel” Kowalski in late October. Ninety-one bikes rode in that procession. I stood up in the church and told the stator story, and Hammer stood beside me and stared at the floor the whole time.

Jenna sat in the very last pew. She was seven months along, and nobody had saved her a seat up front. Diesel’s mother never liked her, and since they weren’t married, his mother handled everything. The money from the benefit ride went to his mother too. Eleven thousand dollars. We thought we were doing it by the book.

Jenna left before the burial. A month later her phone number didn’t work, and the trailer she and Diesel rented out past Clay Center sat empty with a FOR RENT sign in the yard.

We told each other she needed space. We told each other she’d reach out when she was ready. Then life rolled on the way it does, and six years went by without one of us going to look for her.

Now I was crouched on a gas station curb, holding the last thing my brother ever made with his hands.

I stood up slow. My knees cracked, my face was wet, and I didn’t care who saw it. I walked over to pump four with that little wooden bike held out in front of me.

“Jenna?” I said.

She’d cut her hair short and gotten thin, the kind of thin that comes from skipping your own supper so somebody else can have seconds. But it was her. She looked at me for a long time, and I watched her face go from tired to hard.

“Hello, Walt,” she said. She took the toy out of my hands and set it on the roof of her car. Then she hung up the nozzle and said, “Danny, get in the car, baby.”

Danny. She’d named him after his daddy.

The boy didn’t move. He was staring at me with his head tilted, the exact way Diesel used to tilt his when he was trying to figure out a carburetor.

“Mister,” he said. “Did you know my daddy?”

My throat closed up. All I could do was nod.

His whole face lit up. I’ve seen a lot of things in sixty-four years, but I’ve never seen a kid look at anybody the way that boy looked at me right then. Like I was holding something he’d been searching for his whole life.

“He does this everywhere,” Jenna said quietly. She wasn’t looking at me. She was looking at her son. “Every gas station. Every parking lot. Every time he hears a Harley, he grabs that bike and goes running. He rolls it right up to strangers and waits for somebody to tell him they knew Diesel.”

Then she turned her eyes on me.

“Three years he’s been doing that, Walt. You’re the first ones who ever did. And you laughed at him.”

I got shot at outside Kuwait City in 1991. I fell thirty feet off a power pole in the ice storm of ‘07. Neither one hit me as hard as those last five words.

Behind me, I heard boots on concrete.

Jenna saw who it was and said, “Danny. In the car. Now.” This time the boy listened. He climbed into the back seat, but he left the door hanging open.

Hammer came across that lot like a man walking to his own hanging. He’s the biggest man I know, and right then he looked smaller than the boy. When he reached Jenna’s car, he went down on both knees on the oil-stained pavement.

“Jenna,” he said. “I got to tell you something about the night he died. I should have told you six years ago. He wasn’t out there because my bike broke down. He was out there because I…”

“Because you were drunk,” Jenna said. “Because you laid your bike down by the Abilene exit and called him instead of a tow truck, so you wouldn’t lose your license.”

Hammer’s mouth hung open. So did mine.

“You think I didn’t know?” Her voice shook, but she never raised it. “You think I sat in the back of that church and believed your stator story?”

She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a phone, and not a new one either. An old flip Samsung with a cracked screen and a strip of tape holding the battery cover on.

“I can’t afford much,” she said. “But I pay twelve dollars a month to keep this line alive. And every twenty-eight days, it tells me it’s going to delete a saved message. And every twenty-eight days, I press nine to keep it.”

She pushed a few buttons and held it out on speaker.

A hiss came first, and then a voice I hadn’t heard in six years came out of that little phone. Road noise behind it. A blinker ticking.

“Hey babe, it’s me. Hammer laid it down out by the Abilene exit. He’s okay, he’s just drunk and stupid. I’m gonna go get him before somebody calls it in. Don’t wait up.” A pause, and you could hear him smiling. “And hey. Tell my boy goodnight for me.”

The message ended. A flat recorded voice said, “Received October eighth, at one sixteen a.m.”

Nobody in that parking lot moved. Ray and Tommy and the rest of the boys had drifted up behind us, and I heard one of them make a sound like he’d been punched in the gut.

Hammer bent forward until his forehead nearly touched the concrete, and his shoulders started heaving. Two hundred and eighty pounds of man, crying like a child in front of a Shell station.

“I played that the night the trooper came to my door,” Jenna said. “I held this phone against my belly and played it for him. Tell my boy goodnight. That was the last thing his daddy ever said, and he said it to him.”

She wiped her face with the back of her wrist.

“Then I watched every one of you stand up in that church and lie about how he died. Every one of you. And I thought, I can’t raise his son around men who’d do that. So I left.”

I wanted to tell her the lie was my idea. I wanted to take the whole thing on myself. But that would have been one more moment about us, and for once in my life I had the sense to keep my mouth shut.

Hammer finally lifted his head. His eyes were red and his beard was soaked.

“I ain’t had a drink since that night,” he said. “Six years and eleven days. I know it don’t fix nothing. I just wanted you to know.”

Jenna looked down at him for a long time. Then she said something none of us saw coming.

“Somebody’s been sending me money orders,” she said. “Every month for four years. Three hundred dollars, no name, no letter. Always postmarked Salina.”

She looked straight at Hammer.

“Diesel told me once you’d lived in Salina your whole life.”

I turned and stared at him. Four years. He’d found her four years ago, and he’d never said one word to any of us.

Hammer didn’t deny it. He just nodded.“Took me two years to find you,” he said. “Took me another year to work up the nerve to drive past your place. I’d sit across the street at night with the engine running. Never could make myself knock.” He glanced at the open car door and his face crumpled again. “I never saw him. Not once. I swear to God I didn’t know who he was.”

“I know you didn’t,” Jenna said.

She was quiet a minute. Then she said the most honest thing I’ve ever heard anybody say.

“That money kept my lights on two winters ago, when the diner cut my hours. It paid for his glasses. It paid for his birthday.” She swallowed hard. “I hate that it came from you. And I’m grateful it came from you. Both of those are true, and I don’t know what to do with that.”

Hammer bowed his head. “You don’t have to do nothing with it.”

That’s when Danny climbed out of the back seat. He walked right up to Hammer, who was still on his knees, which put the two of them almost eye to eye.

“Are you Hammer?” he asked. “Daddy’s best friend Hammer?”

Hammer couldn’t answer. He just nodded.

“Mama says my daddy died helping his best friend,” Danny said. “She says that’s what heroes do.”

I looked at Jenna. She held my eyes and gave the smallest shake of her head.

Weeks later, she told me why. “That part’s the truth,” she said. “His daddy died helping his best friend. The rest of it, the drinking and the lying, that’s not his to carry. That’s yours. Yours and Hammer’s.”

But right then, in that parking lot, Danny reached up and put his small hand on Hammer’s face, right on the wet part of his beard.

“Don’t cry,” he said. “Mama says Daddy would’ve done anything for you.”

I had to turn around and walk to the ice machine. Ray was already standing there with his cap pulled down over his eyes.

When I came back, Danny had his wooden bike again and was showing it to Hammer. He explained every part the way little kids explain things, dead serious, pointing with one finger. The bottle cap wheels. The nail kickstand. The coat hanger handlebars.

“Mama made the handlebars,” he said. “Daddy didn’t get to. He made the rest in the garage before I was borned. Mama says he cut his thumb real bad on the gas tank part.”

Hammer ran one big finger over the letters on that tank like he was reading braille.

“What did his real motorcycle sound like?” Danny asked. “Mama says it was loud.”

Hammer wiped his face. “Loud ain’t the word, little man. Your daddy had a 1999 Fat Boy with straight pipes. When he fired it up in the morning, every dog in Clay County started howling.”

Danny giggled. Hammer laughed too, and it broke right in the middle.

“Where is it?” Danny asked.

Nobody had an answer. Diesel’s mother sold the Fat Boy about three months after the funeral. Some fella from Hays bought it. None of us had even bothered to get his name.

Jenna said they had to go. She had a double starting at four. She buckled Danny in, then pulled a pen from her apron, wrote a number on the back of a gas receipt, and handed it to me. Not to Hammer. To me.

“He’s going to want to see you again,” she said across the roof of the car. “I’m not saying yes yet. But I’m not saying no.”

Then she drove away, and six grown men stood in a gas station parking lot and didn’t say a word for a long, long time.

The next Wednesday was church at the clubhouse. Thirty-four members around the table.

Before Preacher could even call it to order, I stood up and told them everything. The ditch. The phone call. The stator story I cooked up in my truck before sunrise. The voicemail. Jenna in the last pew while we handed her baby’s money to somebody else.

When I finished, nobody spoke. Then Lyle, who sponsored Diesel into the club, shoved his chair back so hard it hit the wall, and he walked outside.

Hammer stood up next. He said he’d take whatever the club decided. Patch or no patch, he’d accept it.

Preacher is seventy-one and has been president for nineteen years. He took his glasses off and rubbed his eyes for a while.

“We all swallowed that story,” he finally said. “Every one of us. Nobody asked a single question, because we didn’t want the answer. We left that girl alone for six years. That’s on this whole table.”

Twenty minutes later, Lyle came back in and sat down without a word. That was his vote.

“Now,” Preacher said. “How do we fix it?”

It took us three weeks to find the man from Hays. His name was Gene Barnhart, a retired mail carrier, and he’d kept Diesel’s Fat Boy in his garage under an old quilt. He’d hardly ridden it. He said it never felt like his.

Gene wanted nine thousand for it, because that’s what he’d paid. He wasn’t a rich man, and nobody blamed him. The club passed the hat and came up with forty-two hundred.

Hammer covered the rest. He sold his Road King to a dealer in Wichita to do it.The same Road King that little boy had rolled his wooden bike up next to.

When I asked him if he was sure, Hammer just said, “I don’t need it, Walt. I need to be able to look that boy in the eye.”

We trailered the Fat Boy to Preacher’s shop, and for two months Hammer spent every evening out there. He rebuilt the carb, put new rubber on it, and polished every inch of chrome by hand. He wouldn’t let anybody else touch it.

One night in January, he called me at eleven o’clock.

“Walt,” he said, and his voice sounded wrong. “Get out here.”

When I got to the shop, he was sitting on an upside-down bucket next to the bike, holding the old leather tool roll Diesel always kept strapped under the seat. Gene never opened it.

Inside, folded in half and sealed in a sandwich bag, was an ultrasound picture.

Across the bottom, in Diesel’s blocky handwriting, it said LITTLE DIESEL. RIDES WITH ME.

Hammer and I sat in that cold shop until almost one in the morning, and neither of us said much of anything.

I called the number on the gas receipt in March. Jenna agreed to meet us at the same gas station on Route 36, on a Sunday afternoon, the first warm day of the year.

Twenty-two bikes rode in. Hammer rode in the back on a borrowed Sportster, and behind him, on Preacher’s trailer, sat Diesel’s Fat Boy.

Danny saw it before he saw any of us. He’d only ever seen that bike in one blurry photo Jenna kept on the fridge, but he knew. He came out of that car like he’d been fired from a cannon, holding his wooden bike in both hands, and then he stopped dead about ten feet away.

He looked at the real bike. He looked at the wooden one. Then he looked back at his mama.

“That’s Daddy’s,” he whispered. “Mama, that’s Daddy’s.”

Hammer rolled the Fat Boy off the trailer and set it on the stand. He handed Jenna an envelope. Inside was the title, signed over to Daniel Kowalski Jr., held by his mother until he turns eighteen.

Then he handed her the sandwich bag.

Jenna looked at that ultrasound picture for a long time. Her lips moved as she read the words. Then she put her hand over her mouth and sat right down on the curb, the same curb where her son had been rolling his toy six months before.

“He asked the nurse for an extra copy,” she said, when she could finally talk. “He told me it was for the bike. I always wondered what he did with it.”

Hammer knelt down in front of Danny.

“You want to hear it?” he asked.

Danny nodded so hard his glasses slid down his nose.

Hammer turned the key and thumbed the starter, and that Fat Boy came to life with a roar that rattled the windows of the gas station. Straight pipes, exactly like I remembered. A trucker at pump six took his cap off and held it against his chest.

Danny didn’t cover his ears. He stood there with his mouth open and his eyes shining and his whole little body shaking with the sound of it. Then he stepped up, put his hand flat on the gas tank where it was warm, and left it there.

“Hi, Daddy,” he said.

Nobody in that lot was standing up straight after that. Twenty-two bikers, and every last one of us was wiping his face on his sleeve.

Danny took his wooden bike and set it carefully on the seat of the Fat Boy. Two bikes with the same name, one carved and one built, sitting together for the first time.

Before we left that day, I pulled Jenna aside and told her the stator lie was mine. That I was the one who came up with it, not Hammer.

She just nodded. “Diesel always said you were the one who could talk all of you out of trouble,” she said. “He never meant it as a compliment.”

That one landed hard too. I had it coming.

I want to be honest about how things stand, because I’m done telling pretty stories. Jenna and Hammer aren’t fixed. Some days she’ll talk to him, and some days she can’t look at him, and he takes both without a word of complaint. He stopped sending money orders. Now the money goes straight into a college account with Danny’s name on it, and she lets him.

Danny’s seven now. Every other Sunday, a few of us meet him and Jenna at that gas station on Route 36. He tells us about school, and we tell him stories about his daddy. The true ones this time. All of them, even the ones where Diesel was a hardheaded fool.

Hammer takes him out to Preacher’s shop and lets him sit on the Fat Boy while it idles, and he’s teaching him the name of every part. Danny still carries the wooden bike everywhere he goes. The coat hanger handlebars are coming loose again, and Jenna says she’ll fix them. She won’t let anybody else.

When it’s time to go, we all walk out to our bikes, and Danny stands on the curb next to his mama and waves. And every single time, before we pull out, he yells the same thing.

“Keep the rubber side down!”

Jenna taught him that one. He says it exactly the way his daddy did.

Six of us laughed at that little wooden motorcycle once, like it was nothing but a toy.

Turns out it was the last thing our brother ever built. And the boy holding it was the best thing he ever left behind.

They Laughed at a Kid’s Toy Motorcycle Then They Noticed the Name Engraved on It There were six of us heading home from a charity ride.
