She never talked about dates. Whenever relatives asked whether she had met someone, she would smile and quickly change the subject.

That was why, when Marissa called me and nervously said, “Mom, I want you to meet my fiancé,” I nearly dropped the phone.

I spent the entire day cooking.

Then Grant walked through my door.

He was incredibly handsome, but what surprised me more was the way he treated Marissa.

He pulled out her chair. Don’t take me for an idiot.”

Before I could call Marissa back, he stood up.

“Come with me.”

He led me through the kitchen and out into the backyard.

“What are you doing?” I demanded. “What does any of this have to do with my daughter?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he stopped, turned toward me, and showed me what he had prepared there.

And then, when I finally made out the person standing in the darkness of the backyard, I screamed,

“Oh my God… how did you arrange all of this?”

Part 2
My daughter spent years avoiding dates and photographs because of the birthmark on her face. So when she brought home the man she planned to marry, I watched him closely. Dinner went perfectly until my daughter left the room. Then Grant leaned toward me and mentioned a deal I knew nothing about.

“Mom, those are the fancy plates.”

I looked down at the china in my hands.

“Yes.”

“We’re eating lasagna.”

“I know, dear.”

Marissa stared at me from the kitchen doorway.

“Mari, your mother has been rearranging those plates for 20 minutes,” Gavin said from my phone, where I had him on speaker. “Don’t interfere with the process.”

I glared at the screen. “You were supposed to be here.”

Gavin sounded genuinely miserable about it. At four, she once drew a picture of herself with a purple crayon covering half her face because, according to her, “purple is prettier than red.”

Then she started school. Other children taught her to notice.

By seven, she had learned which side of the class picture she preferred standing on. By 11, she knew how to tilt her face when someone pulled out a camera. At 14, she stopped letting me photograph her unless she approved the picture afterward.

And dating? That seemed to terrify her more than anything. Her biological father had disappeared years earlier, leaving me to explain why one man who was supposed to love her had decided not to stay.

Gavin came into our lives later. He never tried to replace anyone; he just kept showing up, and not once did he treat Marissa like a stepdaughter. Eventually, Marissa stopped waiting for him to disappear, too.

Still, she never brought boys home. Not once.

Then six months ago, she called me. For one ugly second, a thought slipped through my mind: Please don’t let this be some joke.

I hated myself for thinking it.

Grant held out a bottle of wine.

“Mercy?”

“That’s me.”

“I’m Grant.”

Before I could respond, Marissa appeared behind me.

“Mari,” Grant said, smiling. His face completely lit up when he saw her. “Your mom actually let you bring dessert?”

Marissa rolled her eyes. “I made it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

She smacked his arm. He laughed.

Dinner went better than I could have hoped.

Grant asked about Gavin. He listened when I explained how Marissa and I had managed before Gavin came along. He knew which parts of the lasagna Marissa hated. He refilled her water without interrupting what she was saying.

At one point Marissa started telling a story about their disastrous weekend trip to a cabin.

Grant pulled out his phone.

“No,” she warned him.

“Oh, yes.”

He showed me a picture.

Marissa stood outside beside a dead campfire, her hair blowing across her face, laughing with her eyes nearly closed.

Her birthmark was fully visible. No careful angle. No adjusted lighting. Nothing hidden.

I looked at my daughter. Years ago, she would have grabbed the phone: “Let me see.” “Delete that.” “Is it awful?”

That night, she kept eating.

“That picture is evidence of a crime,” she said.

“You killed the fire,” Grant teased.

“It was raining.” “You poured half a bottle of lighter fluid on wet wood.”

“Because you said it needed encouragement, Gray.”

“I said air.”

I laughed. And yet something about the photograph stayed with me.

After dinner, Marissa stood.

“I forgot the cheesecake.”

“You made cheesecake?” I asked.

“It’s upstairs in the little fridge.”

Grant stared at her. “You hid cheesecake from me?”

“I know you.” She kissed the top of his head as she passed. “I’ll be right back.”

Her footsteps disappeared upstairs.

Grant waited until we heard her bedroom door open. Then he placed his fork down.

The warmth disappeared from his face. He leaned toward me and lowered his voice.

“I did my part of the deal, now it’s your turn.”

I froze. “What deal?”

He let out a quick, nervous chuckle. “Mercy, please. Don’t tell me Gavin didn’t explain any of this to you.”

My hands went cold against the edge of the table. “What are you talking about?”

“You really don’t know?”

“Know what?”

Grant stared at me. And one horrifying explanation arrived before I could stop it.

Gavin.

Had he done something? Paid Grant? He pointed toward the kitchen. “Please.”

“Why?”

“Because if I explain it here, you’re going to think I’m insane.”

“I passed that point about 30 seconds ago.”

“Come with me.”

He walked toward the back door. I followed him.

Outside, the backyard was nearly dark. Only the porch light and a small garden lamp near Gavin’s shed were on.

Grant walked toward the far end.

“What exactly did you do?” I demanded.

He kept going.

“Grant.”

“You’ll see.”

“I am not enjoying those words.”

“I wasn’t expecting you to.”

Then I noticed someone standing beside the shed. A man.

For one second I couldn’t make out his face. Then he stepped beneath the garden light.

I screamed.

“GAVIN?”

My husband lifted both hands. “Hi.”

I stared at him. “You are supposed to be four hours away!”

“I was this morning. I drove back early.”

“And you didn’t think to tell me?”

Gavin glanced at the covered shape beside the shed. “That would’ve ruined this.”

Grant muttered, “I’m going inside.”

“No, you’re not.”

Grant stopped. Gavin looked almost guilty. That frightened me more than anything.

“What did you two do?”

Gavin glanced toward Grant. Grant nodded toward something large beside the shed. It was covered with an old moving blanket.

“What is that?” I shrieked.

Gavin took a slow step toward me. “Mercy, before you get angry…”

“I am already angry.”

“Fair.”

“Did you make some kind of deal with Grant?”

Gavin winced. “Yes.”

I stared at him.

Behind us, the back door opened. Marissa’s voice floated across the yard.

“Mom?”

All three of us froze. She hadn’t seen us yet.

“Mari, stay inside!” I called.

“Why?”

Grant whispered, “That sounded suspicious.”

Marissa stepped onto the porch holding a cheesecake. “What are you doing out there?”

Gavin quickly grabbed the edge of the moving blanket. “We’re out of time.”

He pulled. The blanket slid to the grass.

Underneath was an old wooden vanity. Cream paint. Three little drawers. A round mirror with a tiny chip near the top. One scratch along the left corner where a nine-year-old Marissa had once caught it with a metal bracelet.

I knew that vanity.I had bought it for my daughter when she was six. She used to sit in front of it, singing into a hairbrush and covering herself in glitter she called makeup. She’d make faces at herself until we both laughed.

And then, years later, she had carried the mirror into the garage and told Gavin: “I don’t want something in my room whose whole job is looking at me.”

I had thought we’d thrown it away. What I didn’t know was that Gavin had spent the last few weeks restoring it. Even the chipped edge of the mirror had been carefully stabilized.

“Oh my God… how did you arrange all of this?”

Gavin looked toward Grant. “He helped.”

My head snapped around. “The deal.”

Grant nodded. “Part of it.”

“Part?”

Before he could answer, Marissa’s footsteps sounded behind us. She had finally reached the yard.

“Grant?”

Then she saw Gavin. “Gavin?”

Her eyes shifted toward the vanity. The cheesecake tilted dangerously in her hands.

Marissa walked closer. “No.”

Gavin didn’t move. She set the cake down on the patio table, then reached for the small top drawer. Her fingers rested on the old brass handle.

I looked from Grant to Gavin. “You still haven’t told me what the deal was.”

Gavin glanced at our daughter, then back at me. “No. Grant’s part was telling me when Mari stopped checking every photograph. Mine was restoring this if that day ever came.”

Gavin looked at Grant. “Then tonight, he apparently decided you needed a part too.”

Grant shrugged. “I needed to get you outside somehow.”

I stared at both of them. “My turn to do what?”

Gavin held my gaze. “See what Mari doesn’t need from you anymore.”

Marissa reached the vanity. “Gavin, why do you have this?”

Gavin touched the polished edge. “You told me you didn’t want it in your room, Mari. You never told me to throw it away.”

Marissa stared at him.

Then Grant quietly said, “This is where the deal comes in.”

I turned on him. “Start talking.”

Months earlier, Grant had asked Gavin for his blessing before proposing.

“I didn’t give him permission,” Gavin said. “Mari doesn’t need mine. We just talked.”

Gavin had asked Grant one question: “What do you love most about her face?”

Grant’s expression had apparently soured immediately. “I don’t know how to answer that without cutting her into pieces.”

So Gavin told Grant about Marissa’s old habit. Every photograph. Every family gathering. Every camera.

“Is it okay?”

“Can I see it?”

“Delete that one.”

Gavin looked at me and asked, “You remember?”

Of course I remembered. I’d answered those questions hundreds of times.

Gavin continued. “I told Grant not to start reassuring her before she even asked. Just love her normally.”

Grant nodded. “And Gavin said if Mari ever stopped checking every picture, I should tell him.”

Marissa stared at Grant. “You two have been monitoring my selfies?”

“That sounds much worse when you say it,” Grant admitted. “A couple months ago, you stopped asking.”

He pulled out his phone and showed us his lock screen. Marissa stood in a parking lot, hair blowing everywhere, eyes half closed from laughing. Her birthmark was completely visible.

My eyes darted right to her. “You usually hate pictures like…”

I stopped. Marissa noticed. So did Gavin.

That was my part.

Gavin spoke gently. “Mercy, sometimes Mari walks into a room perfectly fine, and you’re already checking who’s staring.”

“I was protecting her.”

“I know.” His tone softened. “But sometimes you remind her to be afraid before anybody has done anything.”

For years, someone would raise a camera and I would immediately say, “Mari, this light is better.” Or, “Turn a little.” Or simply, “You look beautiful, sweetheart.”

Marissa looked at me.

“I think I spent so long watching everybody else for you that I forgot you might not need me doing it anymore,” I admitted.

She reached for my hand. “You were trying to help, Mom.”

I squeezed her fingers. “I’m trying to learn when you’re not asking me to.”

Gavin tapped the vanity. “Which brings us here. I didn’t restore it because I thought you needed to look at yourself differently. I restored it because I hoped someday it could just be furniture again.”

Marissa looked at the mirror. “If you want this back in the garage, that’s where it goes,” Gavin added.

Nobody stirred.

Finally, Marissa sat. She studied herself. Grant waited.

I nearly said, “You look beautiful.” I caught the words.

Then Marissa leaned toward the glass. “Oh my God.”

My old reflex took over. “What?”

She pointed at her hair. “Is that gray?”

Grant laughed. Bad decision.

Marissa spun toward him. “You knew?”

“Mari, there may be more than…”

“Finish that sentence and there will be no wedding.”

Gavin burst out laughing.

I felt like I could finally let my guard down. Her birthmark was right there. And for once, it hadn’t been the first thing anyone needed to discuss.

“Where do you want the vanity?” Gavin asked.

Marissa considered the question. “Our apartment.”

So that evening, we loaded the vanity into Gavin’s SUV and drove it over to Marissa and Grant’s apartment. Then all four of us wrestled it upstairs.

Halfway through the doorway, Marissa snapped, “Dad, rotate it before you destroy the wall.”

Gavin froze. Marissa did too. She usually called him Gavin.

Neither acknowledged it. Gavin simply smiled and turned the vanity.

Later, as we were leaving, I looked back.

Marissa sat at the mirror removing an earring. Grant stood behind her brushing his teeth. He glanced toward her reflection.

Marissa caught him. “Stop staring at me, weirdo.”

Grant spoke around his toothbrush. “I’m brushing my teeth.”

“Suspiciously.”

He flicked a drop of water at her. Marissa yelped.

For one second, I almost stepped back inside. Old habit. Watch. Protect. Check.

Instead, I pulled the door closed. And left my daughter to tell me when she needed me.

My daughter, Marissa, was born with a large birthmark covering part of her face.
