“It means I know enough now to stop being frightened by whatever future you were planning without me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes shifted toward Sophie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So you’re just taking her?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sophie isn’t leverage,” I said. “Don’t turn her into it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One more thing. I need you to say it plainly. Were you having an affair with Sierra?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His face tightened. “Madeline, everyone’s sitting here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They already know enough. I’m asking you to say it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes. I was seeing her.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And while asking me to stay home and depend on your salary?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes dropped. “Yes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I placed my hand on the prenup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Thank you. That’s the first useful truth you’ve given me all week.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You planned this.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I prepared for it. There’s a difference.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom reached for my hand, but she didn’t pull me anywhere. She waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elon looked at me. “So what happens now?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For tonight, Sophie and I are staying with Mom and Dad. Tomorrow, I’ll speak to my attorney. I’ll make decisions when I have facts, not when you’re frightened.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You planned this.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And us?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked at the man I’d loved, then at our daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t know yet. But I know I’m not giving up my job, my security, or my voice to make this marriage easier for you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
