I thought about the empty chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About how easily I’d believed Mom because she’d sounded calm while Nicole sounded angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought about how often the person telling the most reasonable version of a story gets believed first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom looked at Nicole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was trying to protect you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I believe you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom seemed relieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Nicole continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But you don’t get to choose for me because you’re scared of a choice you didn’t make.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I can’t stand by and watch you make a mistake.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole took a breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then let me make my own mistake.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And if it is one?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then I’ll deal with it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole reached for Andrew’s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And if it isn’t, I don’t want to spend years proving that to you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom looked at me, maybe expecting me to smooth things over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For once, I didn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Nicole’s right.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom looked hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hated that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I said it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You’re not protecting her from what happened to you. You’re doing to her what they did to you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody spoke for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually Andrew broke the silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t need you to think I’m perfect.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom glanced at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m not.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t even need you to think I’m the person you would’ve chosen for Nicole. I just need you to stop treating me like I’m a test she has to pass.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom looked at Nicole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What do you want from me?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole’s answer came quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Respect.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom nodded faintly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You can worry. You can ask me questions. But you don’t get to confront Andrew behind my back. You don’t get to involve Gideon. And you don’t get to keep trying to talk me out of my own life.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom looked at the photograph again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And if I can’t do that?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole’s eyes filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then you won’t be part of the wedding.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom closed her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she opened them, she nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t a magical reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner didn’t suddenly become cheerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Mom didn’t argue again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, after the cake had been cut and the candles burned low, I found her alone at the table holding the photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole had gone into the kitchen with Andrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom ran her thumb over the edge of the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You know that building?” she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked at the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What about it?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Gideon and I used to walk past it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She gave a small laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We couldn’t afford a place there. Not even close. But we’d pick a window and pretend it was ours.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom was quiet for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Nicole came back into the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom looked up at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I still think you’re taking a risk.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom looked at Andrew, then back at her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But it’s your risk.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole’s eyes filled, though she smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yeah.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom held the photograph for another second before setting it gently on the table instead of turning it face down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that was when I finally understood what she’d been trying so hard not to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her parents may have loved her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She loved Nicole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But love didn’t automatically make control into protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the hardest thing you could give someone you loved was the freedom to choose a future you wouldn’t have chosen for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
