The man laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Five girls? You sure?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rick said, “Yeah.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’ve got five precious daughters.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lily heard him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw her smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mattered more to me than anything he could have said to me privately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rick thought his threat would scare me into carrying another pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, I believed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believed he might leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believed I needed to prepare our family for that possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And once he realized I wasn’t going to beg him to stay, he had to confront what leaving actually meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shared custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five sets of needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five daughters who would still be his responsibility whether or not he ever had a son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wanted me to prove I was willing to give him one more child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preferably a son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, I made him prove he was willing to father the five he already had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And thankfully, he finally learned it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
