I couldn’t believe she was asking now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gestured toward me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You saw something that looked bad. You decided what it meant. Then you stopped asking questions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That’s what happened with me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I had paperwork.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And she had underwear.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linda flinched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark looked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan’s voice softened as he said, “I’m not saying you had no reason to be suspicious. I’m saying you decided suspicion was the same thing as proof.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That finally broke through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linda looked at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was wrong.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn’t answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I shouldn’t have searched your room.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I shouldn’t have changed the lock.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And I shouldn’t have accused you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was as much forgiveness as I had in me right then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Linda looked at Ryan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn’t rush toward her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Didn’t hug her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Didn’t say everything was fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He simply sat there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, she asked, “Can I call you?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan thought for a long moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he said, “You can call.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No 20-year wound closing in five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just permission to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we got home, Mark immediately removed the lock Linda had installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stood in the bedroom doorway watching him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What am I supposed to do with these?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Burn them.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No. Ryan’s getting them back.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then please put them in a bag first.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I did too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because everything was fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linda had violated our privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark had hidden months of contact with his brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan and Linda had years of hurt between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But by the end of that day, one thing was finally clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strange lock on my bedroom door had never protected anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
