Part 2: The note said Rusty had spent almost ten years gardening at sunrise with his owner, an elderly widower named Walter, and every morning ended the same way: four careful strokes, a quiet rest beside the fresh soil, and the earth returned together.
The handwriting leaned sharply downhill, as though Walter had written it in a hurry before entering long-term care.
Inside the envelope was a faded photograph of a much younger Rusty sitting beside a newly planted garden bed.
Walter sat next to him with one hand resting on the soil, and neither of them was looking at the camera.
The volunteer admitted that the envelope had arrived separately after Rusty was adopted, then vanished into the wrong folder before anyone contacted me.
She called the care home while I held the photograph near Rusty\u2019s nose.
