“Do I have to go back there?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“To my house?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn’t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoe stayed with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time since the phone call, Mark looked genuinely broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because Miranda hadn’t only insulted his ex-wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She’d made his daughter feel unsafe in her own face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark moved into his brother’s apartment three days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He never told me every detail of what happened between him and Miranda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn’t need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only thing that mattered to me was that when Zoe said she didn’t want to be around Miranda, her father believed her the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the harder repair happened quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between Zoe and me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One evening, she brought the plastic bin upstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Can we go through these?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time she didn’t study my face like evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I told her stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She laughed at my eyebrows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I retaliated by showing her Mark’s haircut from 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually we reached the green dress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoe held the photograph for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This was the one,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The one what?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I kept coming back to.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She studied my face one last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she put the photograph back without touching her own face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the first time I knew we were getting somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Months later, I was getting ready for dinner when Zoe appeared behind me in the bathroom mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her lips had long since returned to normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stared at my reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt that old fear rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She leaned closer to the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I really do have your mouth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoe frowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For what?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Genetics.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her fingers briefly touched her lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she looked at herself again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think I’m keeping it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I laughed so suddenly I almost ruined my mascara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoe laughed too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for the first time since she’d come home with her face hidden under that hood, neither of us looked away from the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
