I don\u2019t know where those words came from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I barely believed them myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We flew home that evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning, I called my lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she explained something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The affair itself would not automatically decide custody or finances in our state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What mattered was evidence of marital spending, parenting patterns, assets and anything affecting Mason\u2019s welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDocument everything,\u201d she told me. \u201cDo not delete anything. Do not access accounts you\u2019re not legally entitled to access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I didn\u2019t go hacking into Tyler\u2019s private accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had a desktop computer that Tyler normally used when he was home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had left his airline email and personal messages synced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And apparently, once a man decides his marriage is already over, he can become remarkably careless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I found months of messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hotel confirmations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Restaurant charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photos and messages about Laila\u2019s pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a copy of the prenatal paternity test they had done after she became pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I forwarded everything I was legally able to access to Denise, my lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days later, Tyler came home while Mason was at school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He packed clothes into two suitcases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m staying with Laila for now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stood in the bedroom doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked surprised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe he expected me to beg him to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, I asked one question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you ever plan to have a conversation with Mason?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyler looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t figured that part out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That answer told me more about him than the affair had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The divorce took almost nine months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was exhausting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were emails, financial disclosures, appraisals, mediation sessions, legal bills and arguments over schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sold the house because neither of us could comfortably buy out the other\u2019s share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The equity was divided according to our settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also divided savings and other marital assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, I was terrified about money because I wasn\u2019t traditionally employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m an artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, people treated that like a hobby because I worked from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sold original work, accepted commissions, licensed several designs, and saved and invested part of what I earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wasn\u2019t rich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I wasn\u2019t helpless either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mason lived primarily with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyler received parenting time under a regular schedule, including overnight visits once Mason became more comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I never tried to keep them apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mason loved his father, even while he was furious with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those two things could exist at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I learned to be civil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laila and I will never be friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I doubt we\u2019ll ever even like each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she is going to be part of Mason\u2019s life because his father chose her, and because Mason now has a half-sibling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I refuse to make my son carry my bitterness for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few months after the divorce became final, Mason and I moved into a three-bedroom apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His room was the first one we finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second bedroom became mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the third became something I had wanted for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A real studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not one corner of the dining room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not canvases stacked behind the couch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A proper room with shelves for paint, a wide worktable, good lighting and a door I could close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first night after I finished setting it up, I stood in the middle of that room and cried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I missed Tyler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cried because I finally understood how much of myself I had folded into our marriage without even realizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyler hadn\u2019t simply cheated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had been building a second future while I was still living inside the first one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow, he had expected me to stand politely at the edge of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t hate him anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most days, I don\u2019t feel enough about him to hate him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mason is doing better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He still has questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they\u2019re difficult questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they\u2019re impossible ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I answer what I can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyler and I mostly communicate about school, medical appointments, activities and pickup times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very boring things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m grateful for the boring now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t know whether Tyler and Laila will last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, I don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A relationship that began with lies is theirs to manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My problem was figuring out how to build a life after the one I thought I had vanished somewhere at 30,000 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I have built it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drawing Mason made for Tyler is still in my desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He never gave it to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once, I asked if he wanted to throw it away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I kept it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think that\u2019s where both of us are now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re not pretending nothing happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re not pretending it doesn\u2019t hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re simply leaving room for someday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever someday eventually means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
