He said I was 70, retired, and “sat at home” anyway, so I didn’t need it like he did. Three nights later, he siphoned my tank again. That’s when I stopped asking nicely—and left something on his porch.

I’m 70 years old, retired, and a widower.

I still live in the little suburban house Nancy and I bought more than thirty years ago.

Nancy died six years ago.

The house got very quiet after that. I spend more time at home than I used to, but I keep busy. I’m the old guy on the street with a pickup who usually says, “Sure, I can do that.”

I’m 70 years old, retired, and a widower.

Every Thursday, I get groceries for Mrs. Patterson, who’s 82.

I haul things for neighbors when they need a truck, and twice a month I help pick up boxes for our church pantry.

My pickup is a 1996 Ford F-150.

It used to be dark green. Decades of sun have faded the hood, the driver’s seat is patched with duct tape, and the passenger window needs a little help going up.

“Sure, I can do that.”

Nancy hated that truck.

She also named it Earl, but I never understood why.

“Because it looks like an Earl,” she’d say.

Whatever that meant.

Earl is old and ugly, but I’ve had that truck for thirty years. I know every sound it makes, and I know exactly how much gas I use in an average week.

Which is why I noticed when it started disappearing.

“Because it looks like an Earl,”

The first time, I thought I’d made a mistake.

I’d filled the tank Monday, driven maybe twelve miles, then stayed home for two days. Thursday morning, the gauge sat just above half.

I checked under the truck for a puddle.

Nothing.

I thought I’d made a mistake.

At 70, people start blaming your age for everything, and sometimes you do it to yourself. Maybe I hadn’t filled it completely.

Maybe I’d driven more than I remembered.

The next week, it happened again.

That answered one question: I wasn’t imagining it. But if Earl wasn’t leaking, where was the gas going?

The next week, it happened again.

This time I knew I had a real problem.

I had filled up on Sunday afternoon.

Tuesday morning, I was supposed to take Mrs. Patterson to a pharmacy because she needed to pick up a prescription and didn’t want to use a delivery service.

I opened the door, climbed in, and turned the key.

Less than half a tank.

This time I knew I had a real problem.

I actually slapped the steering wheel.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Mrs. Patterson called while I was standing beside the truck.

“You still coming, Frank?”

“Yes. I’m just running behind.”

“You don’t need to rush.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“I told you nine-thirty.”

“It’s fine.”

“No, it isn’t. I’ll be there.”

I had to stop for gas first. I was twenty-five minutes late.

Mrs. Patterson was sitting on her porch when I arrived.

She climbed in slowly and gave me a little smile.

I was twenty-five minutes late.

“Don’t worry about me,” she said. “You do enough already.”

That made me feel worse.

When I tell someone I’ll do something, I do it.

So the next day, I took Earl to my mechanic, Steve.

Steve has worked on the truck for almost fifteen years.

I told him, “I think I’ve got a leak.”

When I tell someone I’ll do something, I do it.

He looked under the hood.

“Smell gas?”

“No.”

“See anything under it?”

“No.”

“How much are you losing?”

I took Earl to my mechanic

“Several gallons.”

Steve raised an eyebrow.

“That’s not a leak. That’s a crisis.”

“Very funny.”

He kept Earl most of the afternoon. Around four, he called me.

“Frank, your truck is fine.”

“It’s thirty years old. It’s never fine.”

“That’s not a leak. That’s a crisis.”

“You know what I mean. Fuel system is good. Tank isn’t leaking. Lines look fine.”

“Then where’s the gas going?”

There was a pause. Steve said, “You got teenagers around?”

“No.”

“Well, if nobody else is using the truck, I’d buy a camera.”

So, that’s what I did.

“Then where’s the gas going?”

Nothing fancy. Just one of those little security cameras connected to my phone.

I pointed it toward the driveway.

The next morning, I made coffee and checked the footage.

At 1:17 a.m., somebody walked onto my property.

I leaned closer to the screen.

It was my neighbor, Clark.

So, that’s what I did.

The mystery was over. What I couldn’t understand was why a man who lived three houses away—and wasn’t hurting for money—was stealing from me.

Clark lived with his wife and two kids.

He was about 45, worked in insurance, drove a fairly new SUV, and somehow complained about money constantly.

Clark had been borrowing things from me for years.

The mystery was over.

My ladder, my socket set, my extension cord, my pressure washer.

Once, my red gas can.

Getting anything back from him was like negotiating a hostage release.

“Clark, do you still have my ladder?”

“Yeah, yeah. I’ll bring it over.”

A week later: “Clark, ladder?”

Getting anything back from him was like negotiating a hostage release.

“You need it today?”

That question always annoyed me. Why should I need a reason to want my own ladder?

Still, I usually let it go.

Watching the video, I saw Clark carry a gas can up to Earl.

Then he pulled out a hose.

I actually whispered, “No.”

I saw Clark carry a gas can up to Earl.

He opened my gas cap, fed the hose into the tank, and started siphoning.

My jaw dropped.

There was no misunderstanding. No innocent explanation. My neighbor was stealing gas out of my truck in the middle of the night.

I was at his front door ten minutes later.

He answered wearing sweatpants and holding coffee.

There was no misunderstanding.

“Morning, Frank.”

“Have you been siphoning gas from my pickup?”

His face changed for half a second. Then he laughed.

“Okay. Yeah. I take a little sometimes.”

There was my admission. Instead of apologizing, though, Clark acted as if I were the one who needed an explanation.

“Have you been siphoning gas from my pickup?”

I couldn’t believe how casually he said it.

“A little?”

“Have you seen gas prices lately?”

“Have you lost your mind?”

He frowned. “Come on, Frank. You’re retired. You sit home most of the time. I have to drive to work every day. I have kids to take to school.”

“So?”

“Have you lost your mind?”

“So you don’t even use most of it.”

For a second, I couldn’t speak. Then I said, “Clark, you don’t get to decide how much of my property I need.”

He rolled his eyes. “God, you’re greedy.”

I actually laughed then because the accusation was so absurd.

“I’m greedy?”

“God, you’re greedy.”

“It’s a couple gallons. We’re neighbors. We’re supposed to share.”

That word bothered me more than anything else he said.

Share. I had shared plenty with Clark. I had lent him tools. Helped jump-start his wife’s car. Hauled branches after a storm.

Sharing is something somebody agrees to.

Clark was taking.

“We’re neighbors. We’re supposed to share.”

“Stay away from my truck,” I said.

He shook his head. “You’re making this way bigger than it is.”

“I don’t care what size you think it is. Stay away from my truck.”

I went home.

I thought that was the end of it.

But three nights later, he came back.

“Stay away from my truck,”

I checked the camera the next morning.

There he was. At one point he even looked directly toward the camera.

He was shameless.

And that created a different problem. How do you stop someone who knows you have proof and still believes you won’t use it?

He was shameless.

I gave him one last chance.

I printed two stills from the camera, wrote down the dates and missing gas, and handed him the bill.

Clark laughed. “You’re billing me? What are you going to do, call the cops over a few gallons?”

I looked at him. “Is that what it will take?”

For the first time, his grin slipped.

That tiny change told me something had finally reached him.

“Is that what it will take?”

“Enough! Get off my porch and stop being such an old Scrooge.”

Clark shut the door in my face.

I went home and spent that evening putting something together.

The next afternoon, I left a cardboard box on Clark’s porch. Across the outside, in thick black marker, I’d written:

SINCE ASKING NICELY DIDN’T WORK.

I left a cardboard box on Clark’s porch.

I made sure the words — and one enlarged security-camera still of Clark beside my truck — faced the street.

Inside was the rest.

Clark found it around five.

I know because I heard him from inside my kitchen.

The box got his attention. I didn’t yet know it was about to expose something much bigger than my missing gas.

Inside was the rest.

“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?”

I walked outside.

So did half the street.

Clark stood on his porch, red-faced, holding the enlarged photograph. Inside the box were the other camera stills, my itemized gas invoice, and a list of things he’d borrowed from me and never returned.

“You think this is funny?”

So did half the street.

“I think asking privately didn’t work.”

Mrs. Delgado from across the street walked closer and glanced at the list.

“Pressure washer?”

I said, “He borrowed mine.”

Mrs. Delgado frowned. “But he borrowed mine too.”

That was the moment the argument stopped belonging only to me.

“But he borrowed mine too.”

Clark turned toward her.

“Yours wasn’t working right.”

“It was working when I gave it to you.”

Then Tom walked up and looked at the list.

“Ladder?” Tom looked toward Clark’s garage. “But that’s my ladder in there.”

Everyone looked.

“Yours wasn’t working right.”

Sure enough, leaning beside the garage wall was Tom’s yellow ladder.

Clark threw up his hands. “I was going to return it.”

“When?”

“I don’t know. Soon.”

Mrs. Delgado pointed. “Is that my extension cord?”

Clark looked toward the garage again. More people started talking.

“I was going to return it.”

One neighbor had loaned Clark a hedge trimmer.

Another had loaned him a socket wrench.

Another had given him a folding table for a birthday party eight months earlier.

Every story sounded almost identical.

For years, every one of us had apparently thought we were dealing with our own small irritation.

Now everybody was comparing notes. Clark realized it too.

Every story sounded almost identical.

“This is ridiculous,” he said. “Everybody borrows things.”

Tom said, “Borrowing usually includes returning.”

Clark pointed at me. “This started because he got mad about a few gallons of gas.”

“A few gallons several times,” I said.

“I have a family. Two kids. Everything costs money. Groceries. School. Gas. You people don’t get it.”

Part of me actually hesitated.

“Borrowing usually includes returning.”

Raising kids is expensive.

I remembered those years.

Then Tom said, “Didn’t you just buy a fishing boat?”

That took the air out of Clark’s excuse. So he reached for the argument he’d used on me from the beginning.

Clark looked at him. “That’s different. I work hard for my money.”

“Didn’t you just buy a fishing boat?”

Mrs. Delgado replied, “So does everybody.”

Then Clark pointed toward my driveway. “He doesn’t even go anywhere! That truck sits there half the week!”

Mrs. Patterson had come outside by then. She lives near the corner, and she’d slowly walked over with her cane.

She said, “He gets my groceries every Thursday.”

“He doesn’t even go anywhere!”

Tom added, “He hauled my washer away.”

Mrs. Delgado said, “He picks up food for the church pantry.”

Another neighbor said, “He brought lumber home for me last month.”

I felt strangely embarrassed hearing all of it listed out. I never thought of those things as favors worth mentioning. That finally shut Clark up.

“He picks up food for the church pantry.”

He couldn’t claim I didn’t need the truck anymore. But being proven wrong wasn’t the same as making things right.

After a moment, Clark pointed at the box.

“And everyone thinks this is normal?”

I looked around at the neighbors standing there.

“No. What’s not normal is stealing from people and counting on them to stay quiet.”

Tom crossed his arms.

Clark pointed at the box.

“This isn’t about the box anymore, Clark.”

Then Mrs. Delgado said, “I want my pressure washer.”

Clark sighed. “Fine. I’ll bring it over later.”

“No,” she said. “We’re already here. I want it back, now.”

Tom nodded toward the garage. “I’d like my ladder too.”

Clark stood there, surrounded by people who weren’t yelling, weren’t threatening him, and weren’t leaving.

“This isn’t about the box anymore, Clark.”

His usual trick had stopped working. For once, “later” wasn’t going to make everyone leave.

Finally, he disappeared into the garage.

He came back carrying Tom’s ladder.

Then Mrs. Delgado’s pressure washer.

Then my extension cord and my socket set. Someone’s hedge trimmer, the folding table. Watching that garage slowly empty was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen.

Finally, he disappeared into the garage.

Clark brought out the last item and said, “There. Happy?”

I looked at him.

“You still owe me for the gas.”

His mouth opened. I held up one of the printed photographs.

“I have every date.”

He stared at me for a long time. Then he went inside.

“There. Happy?”

He came back with cash. He pushed it into my hand.

“You’re unbelievable.”

I counted it. “Looks right.”

He slammed his front door.

People slowly went home.

Mrs. Patterson stayed beside me. She looked back at the box on Clark’s porch and smiled.

“You’re unbelievable.”

“Is that a ‘get out of jail free’ card from Monopoly? Nancy would’ve loved that. She would’ve been proud of you for finally making a fuss.”

That caught me off guard. I looked toward my driveway.

Earl sat there in the fading light, scratched and ugly as ever.

“Yeah,” I said. “She would’ve.”

Clark hasn’t touched my truck since.

“Is that a ‘get out of jail free’ card from Monopoly?”

He’s also stopped borrowing things. Actually, from what I can tell, he’s stopped talking to most of us.

That’s fine.

A week after everything happened, I picked up Mrs. Patterson for groceries.

Mrs. Patterson climbed into the passenger seat. “Enough gas?”

I smiled. “Plenty.”

he’s stopped talking to most of us.

She buckled herself in.

“Good. I need to stop at the pharmacy too.”

I put the truck in gear.

“Sure,” I said. “I can do that.”

“Sure, I can do that.”

My neighbor stole gas from my old pickup, then laughed when I confronted him.
